passage of the Voting Rights Act.
NEW YORK --
The New York Civil Liberties Union announced today that it
is monitoring
elections statewide and will respond to complaints from
voters who experience
obstacles at the polls.
NYCLU lawyers will staff a hotline for
voters and observers to report problems at polling places. In previous years,
the NYCLU has received complaints about broken voting machines, requests that
voters provide personal identification even when it is not legally required, and
errors in lists of registered voters. The NYCLU has also fielded complaints
regarding lack of assistance in voting booths for persons with
disabilities.
"The right to vote is both an essential individual
liberty and a cornerstone of our democracy," said Donna Lieberman, NYCLU
Executive Director. "On this critical election day, the NYCLU will keep its
phone lines open and will pursue immediate solutions to any voting problems
reported."
Voters can reach the NYCLU's hotline by calling (212)
607-3300.
