American Civil Liberties Union

There has never been a more urgent need to preserve fundamental privacy protections and our system of checks and balances than the need we face today, as illegal government spying, provisions of the Patriot Act and government-sponsored torture programs transcend the bounds of law and our most treasured values in the name of national security.

Federal Judge Orders CIA To Turn Over Torture Memo For Court Review (05/08/2008)
NEW YORK – A federal judge today ordered the CIA to produce, for the court's review, a memo specifying brutal interrogation methods for use on prisoners held in U.S. custody overseas. The judge demanded the government make the memo available to him so that he can determine whether it should be made public pursuant to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union and other organizations. The memo, which is one of the most important torture documents still being withheld by the Bush administration, was written by the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) and sent to the CIA in August 2002.
