National Security:
Throughout U.S. history "national security" has often been used as a pretext for massive violations of individual rights. The terrorist attacks on Sept. 11 mobilized our country in the fight against terrorism. However, this also launched a serious civil liberties crises. The ACLU continues to challenge policies like the USA Patriot Act, and creates campaigns like Safe and Free.

Federation of American Scientists
Originally the Federation of Atomic Scientists (whose first members worked on the Manhattan Project), the Federation of American Scientists is dedicated to ending the arms reace and avoiding the use of nuclear weapons. Their involvment with a number of peace and security projects is reflected by the broad issue coverage of their web site. 

Project on Government Secrecy
The Project on Government Secrecy works to challenge excessive government secrecy and to promote public oversight. Its home page showcases a hyper-text archive of the Secrecy and Government Bulletin, related documents from the Clinton Administration, and documents from the Security Policy Board. The site also contains information on security classification. 

MediaFilter
MediaFilter's slogan is "uncompromising coverage some find compromising." This site serves as a clearinghouse for information on covert action, and communication with war-torn areas. Highlights include the Balkan Media and Policy Monitor, Covert Action Quarterly, and GloboCop Watch. 

EFF "Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Open Government"
This section of the Electronic Frontier Foundations site contains a hypertext version of the FOIA text.
