OVERVIEW:
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), is a national public interest organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights. Since its founding in 1920, the nonprofit, nonpartisan ACLU has grown from a small group of civil liberties activists to a nationwide organization with 50+ affiliates around the country. We are experiencing historic growth in our fundraising programs. The bulk of the annual budget is raised by contributions from individuals. A majority of the budget directly supports litigation, legislation, and public education programs, and funds raised are shared with ACLU affiliates. The ACLU Foundation (ACLUF) is the national tax-deductible, 501(c)(3) arm of the ACLU. The combined annual budget of the ACLU and the ACLUF is approximately $100 million.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Direct Marketing Specialist will manage the day-to-day aspects of a high-touch direct response program for ACLUF donors who contribute between $250 and $9,999 annually. The Direct Marketing Specialist will:

  • Collaborate with Director of Special Gifts to implement strategies in order to solicit giving from individual high-dollar donors and prospects
  • Manage all aspects of direct mail, telemarketing and e-marketing efforts for Special Gifts donors with the direct response vendor - including but not limited to - list development, copy approval, art/design approval, testing schedule, results and metrics
  • Manage the acknowledgement of contributions in an accurate and timely manner
  • Collaborate with database team to ensure continued hygiene of data
  • Manage the Special Gifts budget
  • Coordinate and manage all Special Gifts materials; maintain program archives
  • Implement and manage the Special Gifts marketing calendar
  • Facilitate proper recording, tracking and reporting of contributions
  • Maintain current direct response trends, and determine appropriate application to program
  • Assist the Director of Special Gifts, Deputy Director of Development, and Director of Development with other projects as requested

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree, plus 4-5 years of direct marketing experience, or comparable development experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the technical and analytical aspects of managing a direct marketing campaign in the online and offline environments
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop strong working relationships with colleagues, vendors, and donors
  • Strong organizational skills, multi-tasking skills and attention to detail
  • Strong follow-up skills; the ability to manage projects through completion
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet usage and database management.

COMPENSATION:
The ACLU offers compensation commensurate with experience and within the parameters of the ACLU compensation scale.
