The National Headquarters of the American Civil Liberties Union,
the nation’s premier public interest organization devoted to the defense
of the Bill of Rights, seeks an Intranet Manager to maintain and enhance a vital
internal communications vehicle and information resource for ACLU staff at all
national offices and 53 ACLU affiliates and national chapters throughout the
country, as well as appropriate volunteer leaders at the national and affiliate
level. The Intranet Manager reports to the Director of Affiliate Marketing and
Communications within the Affiliate Support Department.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Intranet Manager is responsible for maintaining and improving an organization-wide
intranet to deliver high quality, up-to-date, accurate and useful information
for a user audience of about 1,000 staff and key volunteers. The current intranet,
called the Loop, is a collaboration and document sharing site created in Microsoft
SharePoint, which launched in early 2008. Ongoing job responsibilities range
from creating web content on behalf of the Affiliate Support Department to soliciting
and coordinating postings from dozens of content publishers from ACLU offices
nationwide, integrating front-end content and design with back-end technology
capabilities, and defining and implementing new features.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage the continuing development of the intranet -- based on the vision
of a more collaborative nationwide organization and the needs of content contributors
and end users -- by devising plans and roll-out strategies for new enhancements.
- Post content to the site, identify and track resolution of software bugs.
- Define needs and work closely with IT staff and tech providers to configure
and customize the intranet’s technology in order to meet known and emerging
business needs and resolve technical problems.
- Provide training, documentation and support for decentralized end-users
and content contributors posting directly to the site to ensure facile, high-quality
and timely content publication.
- Work with staff to identify potential intranet content and features and
allocate intranet resources.
- Promote awareness and use of the intranet.
- Address concerns of, and feedback from, intranet stakeholders and users
throughout the organization.
- Perform site audits, monitor performance and usage statistics, analyze the
data and make recommendations for changes.
- Research, track and understand new web technologies to provide technical
leadership pertaining to web production.
- Set and maintain appropriate intranet standards and guidelines, including
content tagging system and user access levels.
- Administer site security and user administrator logins.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- 3 years of professional experience in web publishing or related field.
- Ability to design web content, as well as draft and edit web copy.
- Experience publishing or administering Microsoft SharePoint sites preferred,
or experience with a web publishing system.
- Familiarity with HTML and web design tools.
- Ability to foster collaborative work relationships at all levels in the
organization, from senior staff to administrative support personnel.
- Experience training groups and/or providing one-on-one coaching in web content
posting.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Experience working with site architecture, search functions, metatagging
and implementing best practices related to web publishing.
- Ability to track and analyze web metrics.
- Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to respond effectively
to questions and feedback from intranet users and stakeholders.
