The Affiliate Support Department of the American Civil Liberties Union
(ACLU) is seeking a full-time Affiliate Email Marketing Manager
to continue implementation of a new shared nationwide email outreach platform
and online marketing support program for its affiliates. This initiative, which
launched in spring 2008, offers a system for sharing member and activist email
lists between the national ACLU and 53 affiliate offices, and provides support
for affiliate online marketing efforts. Ten affiliates have already joined the
program in a phased approach to implementation.
The Affiliate Email Marketing Manager will be supervised by the Director of
Affiliate Marketing and Communications in the Affiliate Support Department in
New York City. The Manager will recruit affiliates to join the program and guide
those affiliates, which are at varying stages of readiness, in building competence
in email outreach and attaining ACLU standards of quality. The Manager will
be responsible for assisting the affiliates in the transition to a common eCRM
platform and full participation in coordinated online outreach efforts that
will ultimately increase the number of our constituents and deepen their engagement
in our work.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
- Work with ACLU staff in the Development, Communications, Information Technology,
Field and Affiliate Support Departments to integrate affiliate email programs
with the national program.
- Manage affiliates’ participation in the Integrated Email Outreach
Project, developing detailed plans and timelines for affiliate rollouts.
- Supervise and provide back-up to a full-time email production specialist
who produces email correspondences on behalf of affiliates, including list
segmentation to reach appropriate audiences with relevant messages.
- Oversee development of a training program and provide ongoing coaching to
affiliates on following ACLU operating procedures and effectively utilizing
the Convio eCRM.
- Participate in the ACLU Email Marketing Team’s weekly meetings for
coordination of message content, scheduling, and decisions about competing
priorities.
- Manage quality control of affiliates’ messages. Develop written standards
for editorial quality of affiliates’ email messages. Provide copyediting
and usability services.
- Facilitate regular review of best practices (by conference calls and/or
in-person sessions) with system participants.
- Develop test plans, monitor and analyze metrics to gauge success of individual
messages and overall effectiveness.
- Use HTML and Convio system to ensure that affiliate messages meet ACLU technical
standards in commonly used browsers.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum of 5 years experience in email marketing, including hands-on work
with eCRMs, preferably Convio.
- Strong project management skills, evidenced by written implementation plans
for new programs.
- Solid understanding of Internet tools, processes and techniques for membership
development, advocacy campaigns, list building and social networking.
- Experience with online marketing and cross-channel marketing in multi-affiliate
or federated organization.
- Proficient in HTML and coding without use of WYSIWYG editor. Experience
adjusting graphics for use in HTML production. Knowledge of cross-browser
and cross-platform issues.
- Proven ability to write for an online audience.
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills that can
be applied to promoting a new program, building consensus and delivering constructive
feedback.
- Detail-oriented with strong follow-through, demonstrated ability to solve
problems, ability to meet tight deadlines and manage resources effectively.
- Non-profit advocacy experience desirable.
COMPENSATION:
