Special Policy Assistant
The Special Policy Assistant assists the Executive Director and the ACLU Board
of Directors in the formulation of Board policy and the administration of the
Board’s operation.
The Assistant must have a well developed understanding of constitutional issues,
the legal system and familiarity with the policies and goals of the ACLU. Experience
at formulating policies regarding civil liberties, social and political issues
is necessary. The ability to analyze and understand legal issues is required.
The position calls for a demonstrated ability to work with people in a very
fast paced environment. Good writing and speaking skills are a must.
The Assistant will have responsibility for working with the Union Board, its
president, as well as staff members, acting as liaison between the Board and
affiliate staff, coordinate Board elections, provide policy guidance and staff
support to Board committees, draft Board agendas, maintain current records of
the affiliate’s Policy Guide and bylaws, and ensure that reports required
by the National ACLU are accurate and submitted in a timely fashion and other
duties as assigned. S/he will advise the chapter coordinator on bylaws and policy
requirements relating to chapter governance, ensure that chapter publications
and proposed public forums conform to affiliate and national policy, and monitor
chapter compliance with the affiliate’s affirmative action goals.
A knowledge of Los Angeles and surrounding communities is important, as well
as the ability to work with diverse communities. Dedication to affirmative action
and experience implementing affirmative action programs are essential.
