Membership Outreach Organizer

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The ACLU of Southern California was founded in 1923, three years after the national ACLU office was established in New York. Since its inception, the ACLU of Southern California has been fighting to preserve and expand the rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. For the past 84 years, it has served Californians as an organization that inspires and reinforces the rights of all Americans.

The ACLU of Southern California (ACLU/SC) seeks a dynamic individual as a full-time organizer to advance membership recruitment and retention. The ACLU/SC relies on its members to help fund its work on an ongoing basis and to build support for its issues and causes. Membership is available to students, individuals and families. Members receive ACLU/SC newsletters quarterly and a premium (e.g. t-shirt, coffee mug) as a gift when they join.

The Membership Outreach Organizer (the “Organizer”) is part of a 4-person Field Department.

REPORTS TO: Field Director and Field Manager

OVERSEES: Membership volunteers/interns

CLASSIFICATION: Fulltime, exempt

GENERAL INFORMATION:
The Organizer manages all planning and execution of the membership outreach program. His/her primary responsibilities are to acquire, retain and upgrade members and to promote the ACLU/SC mission and campaign priorities to the general public with the ultimate goal of increasing total membership revenue for operating support. The Organizer also works with other members of the affiliate staff and board members to synchronize the membership outreach efforts, to organize member-oriented special events, to generate appropriate correspondence and supporting materials (e.g. brochures, fact sheets), and to build a solid base of community support for the organization.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Strategize, develop and implement effective membership recruitment programs (utilizing sales and marketing techniques) primarily through events, public education and face-to-face recruitment;
  • Work as lead organizer for community outreach and public education events where membership recruitment is the chief goal including administering finances, handling logistics and volunteer scheduling;
  • Conceptualize new recruitment tools including written materials, web strategies and new premiums to a broad community including communities of color and youth;
  • Process new memberships originated by ACLU National (e.g. sending ACLU/SC membership cards and premium gifts);
  • Update membership tracking and reporting charts approximately once a month;
  • Build recruitment program for volunteers to assist with events and outreach;
  • Staff membership table at ACLU/SC events;
  • Serve as the "public face" for the ACLU/SC - ensuring that questions from members or prospective members and the public are answered quickly and in a professional, friendly manner;
  • Respond to phone/mail/email inquiries about the ACLU when appropriate and respond to requests for more information;
  • Liaison to ACLU/SC board and committees. Responsible for making presentations as needed. Will circulate materials and publications at various meetings;
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends, and travel as needed;
  • Other duties as needed, both administrative and field related.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The Organizer must have good people skills while adhering to schedules, timelines and administrative obligations.

  • The Organizer must be meticulous and have an exacting attention to detail;
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and oral;It is essential that applicants have a minimum of two years experience in the field with sales, volunteer or membership recruitment or community organizing;
  • Excellent organization and time management skills with strong ability to manage responsibilities independently and follow through on all assignments and projects;
  • Must be able to work effectively with and gain the respect and support of various constituencies;
  • Must be a team player and self-starter; able to take directions, meet swift timelines, prioritize, multi-task, organize and follow through in a fast paced work environment, while remaining highly energetic and focused;
  • The ability to be flexible and adapt to new challenges;
  • A track record of meeting or exceeding goals;
  • Event experience (as an event producer or major participant);
  • Database and Development experience and knowledge that supports development operational systems beneficial;
  • Knowledge Raiser’s Edge a plus;
  • Must be resourceful; creative and understanding of the highly confidential nature of fundraising;
  • Must posses a commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance;
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Marketing background a plus.

REVIEWS: Six month evaluation and performance reviews scheduled annually.
