Executive Director-ACLU of Northern California (9/19/2008)
The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California
Executive Director
San Francisco, CA
The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California (ACLU-NC), the largest
affiliate within the national organization, seeks a dynamic leader to serve
as its next Executive Director. A leading advocacy organization in Northern
California, the ACLU-NC advances the cause of civil liberties and civil rights
through a combination of legal and legislative advocacy, public education and
organizing strategies. The ACLU-NC is a champion of civil liberties and civil
rights issues that are at the forefront of our national debate, including equal
justice, First Amendment freedoms, death penalty reform, the right to privacy,
reproductive rights, due process of law, and equal civil rights for people of
all ethnicities, religions and sexual orientations. This is an extraordinary
opportunity for a visionary leader to shape and guide one of the premier civil
liberties and civil rights organizations in the western United States.
The Executive Director must have a working knowledge of civil liberties and
civil rights issues and policies and be a strong leader and manager who is adept
at balancing internal management with external impact and visibility. The individual
must be an outstanding communicator who is able to convey effectively the mission
and activities of the ACLU-NC to a variety of constituencies. The Executive
Director will work with the Board and senior staff to lead fundraising initiatives
for the affiliate, including the completion of a national capital campaign,
through the cultivation of existing and new major donors. The organization has
achieved significant victories in recent years, and the next Executive Director
must build upon these successes by continuing to strengthen the legal and legislative
advocacy programs while committing to the ongoing growth of membership, public
education and grassroots organizing.
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic leader who will continue to inspire and
guide the organization and play a leading role in the civil liberties and civil
rights movement in the region and nationally. The new Executive Director will
be taking the helm of an organization with an agenda of cutting-edge advocacy
and activism. The person we seek must be an exceptional leader with a deep-seated
commitment to civil liberties and civil rights, must have the ability to operate
comfortably in a grassroots organization and in a non-partisan manner at the
highest levels of the region’s leadership and must have the willingness
to challenge the status quo.
