The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a national not-for-profit public interest organization, invites applicants for the full-time position of Affiliate Outreach Manager to work in the organization's Washington Legislative Office (WLO) located in Washington, D.C., under the direct supervision of the National Field Director.

OVERVIEW:
The primary responsibility of the Affiliate Outreach Manager is to work as an integral part of a dynamic Field Unit within the Washington Legislative Office to develop, build, strengthen and implement public education and outreach with ACLU affiliates, members and activists on federal legislative issues of priority for the ACLU. The Affiliate Outreach Manager will also be expected to provide effective leadership, strong communication and strategic development within the Affiliate Outreach Department, which will assist in improving the ACLU's overall ability to reach and mobilize concerned Americans and persuade them to act in support of the legislative goals of the ACLU.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the Affiliate Outreach Department and manage their outreach to the affiliates
  • Carry out affiliate collaboration and communication with an assigned number of the ACLU’s affiliates
  • Work with the National Field Director to develop affiliate outreach strategies and activities
  • Systematically and regularly review affiliate outreach capacity needs to maintain appropriate workload for the affiliate outreach department
  • Work with affiliates to increase member participation on Capitol Hill
  • Ensure internal information flow to other Field Departments
  • Assist affiliates in implementing and introducing programs that will encourage individuals and groups to support the legislative program of the ACLU
  • Lead the Field Unit’s efforts with assigned affiliates to help strategize about building and maintaining local and state networks
  • Meet benchmarks outlined by the National Field Director
  • Collaborate with Lobbyists, Communications staff and other Field Unit members on key legislative priorities
  • Manage regular coordination meetings with affiliates and facilitate coordination meetings with local contacts of national coalition partners
  • Conduct research on key legislative targets, updating as necessary
  • Report weekly quantifiable results of the Affiliate Outreach Department regarding outreach, legislative and political goals
  • Prepare and provide other reports from the Affiliate Outreach Department as requested in a timely and clear manner
  • Perform other duties relating to the work of the Field Unit as may be required by the National Field Director or her delegates

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Five to seven years of grassroots organizing experience and the ability to identify, develop and train individuals on outreach activities
  • Experience working with coalitions – preferably working as a manager or key strategic partner; national level coalition work a plus
  • Knowledge of, and experience in key organizing activities and tactics, including strategic planning, database management and results reporting
  • Ability to write organizing plans and targeting documents
  • Grassroots organizing and research skills are required
  • Management, Hill and/or campaign experience a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and support organizational efforts
  • Ability to work within a large, complex organization
  • Understanding of financial management and budgeting
  • Track record of building and managing cohesive units
  • Commitment to work within a unit environment
  • Ability to manage both large and small public education and outreach campaigns
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills
  • Must have the ability to analyze and effectively communicate lay understanding of issues relating to law, public policy and the legislative process
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, be a self-starter and possess the ability to work independently
  • Effective time management skills, understanding of priorities and the ability to handle multiple tasks at once
  • Understanding of non-profit organizations
  • Must be available and willing to travel as necessary to meet legislative and organizational needs
  • Commitment to civil liberties and civil rights issues is a must

COMPENSATION:
The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU compensation scale.
