The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a national not-for-profit
public interest organization, invites applicants for the full-time position
of Field Events Manager to work in the organization's Washington
Legislative Office (WLO) located in Washington, D.C., under the direct supervision
of the National Field Director.
OVERVIEW:
The primary responsibility of the Field Events Manager is to work as an integral
part of a dynamic Field Unit within the Washington Legislative Office to develop,
build, strengthen and implement public education and outreach with ACLU affiliates,
members and activists on federal legislative issues of priority for the ACLU.
The Field Events Manager will also be expected to provide effective leadership,
strong communication and strategic development within the Field Events Department
that will assist in improving the ACLU's overall ability to reach and mobilize
concerned Americans and persuade them to act in support of the legislative goals
of the ACLU.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee Field Events Department and manage the implementation of field events
in the states, on Capitol Hill and the federal government
- Work with the National Field Director to develop event strategies to advance
the legislative agenda of the ACLU
- Manage Field Unit involvement in ACLU national conferences and meetings
- Ensure internal information flow to other Field Departments
- Planning and executing strategies for event organizing, creation of public
outreach materials, and public speaking on federal legislative issues where
appropriate
- Implement programs that will encourage individuals and groups to support
the legislative program of the ACLU
- Collaborate with Lobbyists, Communications staff and other Field Unit members
on events promoting key legislative priorities
- Report weekly quantifiable results of the Field Events department regarding
legislative and political goals
- Prepare and provide other reports from the Field Events department as requested
in a timely and clear manner
- Perform other duties relating to the work of the Field Unit as may be required
by the National Field Director or her delegates
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree required
- Five to seven years of grassroots and/or events organizing experience and
the ability to identify, develop and train individuals
- Experience working on events within coalitions – preferably working
as a manager or key strategic partner
- Knowledge of, and experience in strategic planning, database management
and results reporting
- Ability to write detailed event plans and documents
- Grassroots organizing and event planning skills necessary
- Management and/or campaign experience a plus
- Demonstrated ability to lead and support organizational efforts
- Ability to work within a large, complex organization
- Understanding of financial management and budgeting
- Track record of building and managing cohesive units
- Have the personality, attitude and commitment to work within a unit environment
- Ability to manage both large and small grassroots events, working with activists
and within a large organization
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills
- Must have the ability to understand issues relating to law, public policy
and the legislative process
- Must have excellent organizational skills, be a self-starter and possess
the ability to work independently
- Effective time management skills, understanding of priorities and the ability
to handle multiple tasks at once
- Understanding of non-profit organizations
- Must be available and willing to travel as necessary to meet legislative
and organizational needs
- Commitment to civil liberties and civil rights issues a must
COMPENSATION:
The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package,
commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU compensation
scale.
