The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a national not-for-profit public interest organization, invites applicants for the full-time position of Grassroots Advocacy Manager to work in the organization's Washington Legislative Office (WLO) located in Washington, D.C., under the direct supervision of the National Field Director.

OVERVIEW:
The primary responsibility of the Grassroots Advocacy Manager is to work as an integral part of a dynamic Field Unit within the Washington Legislative Office to develop, build, strengthen and implement public education and outreach with ACLU members and activists on federal legislative issues of priority for the ACLU. The Grassroots Advocacy Manager will also be expected to provide effective leadership, strong communication and strategic development within the Grassroots Advocacy department that will assist in improving the ACLU's overall ability to reach and mobilize concerned Americans and persuade them to act in support of the legislative goals of the ACLU.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the Grassroots Advocacy department and manage the implementation of activity to build the capacity for grassroots action on the legislative agenda of the ACLU
  • Ensure internal information flow to other Field departments
  • Planning and executing grassroots mobilization strategies including creation of public outreach materials and public speaking on federal legislative issues where appropriate
  • Work with the National Field Director to develop grassroots advocacy strategies and activities
  • Work to increase ACLU member participation on Capitol Hill
  • Implement programs that will encourage individuals and groups to support the legislative program of the ACLU
  • Work to increase our capacity to communicate quickly and effectively with ACLU members and other concerned individuals about pending federal legislation and ACLU legislative priorities
  • Lead the Field Unit’s efforts to build and maintain activist networks and meet benchmarks outlined by the National Field Director
  • Collaborate with Lobbyists, Communications staff and other Field Unit members on key legislative priorities
  • Report weekly quantifiable results of the Grassroots Advocacy department regarding online outreach and actions, online to offline actions and trainings
  • Prepare and provide other reports from the Grassroots Advocacy department as requested in a timely and clear manner
  • Perform other duties relating to the work of the Field Unit as may be required by the National Field Director or her delegates

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Five to seven years of grassroots organizing experience and the ability to identify, develop and train individuals on outreach activities
  • Experience working with grassroots activists – preferably working as a manager or key strategic partner; national level work a plus
  • Knowledge of, and experience in, key organizing activities and tactics, including strategic planning, database management and regular results reporting
  • Grassroots organizing and research skills are required
  • Management, Hill and/or campaign experience a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and support organizational efforts
  • Ability to work within a large, complex organization
  • Understanding of financial management and budgeting
  • Track record of building and managing cohesive units
  • Commitment to work within a unit environment
  • Ability to manage both large and small public education and outreach campaigns.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, be a self-starter and possess the ability to work independently
  • Effective time management skills, understanding of priorities and the ability to handle multiple tasks at once
  • Understanding of non-profit organizations
  • Must be available and willing to travel as necessary to meet legislative and organizational needs
  • Commitment to civil liberties and civil rights issues a must

COMPENSATION:
The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU compensation scale.
