The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a national public
interest organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights. The Development
Department of the National Office in New York City is seeking a full-time Senior
Gift Planning Officer.
OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the Manager of Affiliate Campaigns for Gift Planning, this senior-level
development professional will be responsible for actively promoting gift planning
among ACLU members and donors, nationwide, through a face-to-face cultivation
and solicitation program in cooperation with 50+ affiliates around the country.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Actively assist with coordination, guidance and management of the gift planning
campaigns of approximately 25 affiliate offices including prospect identification,
direct solicitation of planned gifts, off-site support and on-site training
of affiliate staff and board members to solicit planned gifts and to promote
the ACLU Foundation’s donor recognition program.
- Provide consistent communication to affiliate staff, including donor cultivation
and stewardship materials, as well as performance reports, in order to grow
planned giving capacity within affiliates.
- Coordinate affiliates’ external marketing and communications to promote
gift planning.
- Work closely with national and affiliate major gift staff to coordinate
comprehensive solicitation strategies for major donors.
- Develop and maintain a portfolio of donor and prospect relationships with
a primary emphasis on face-to-face visits, in addition to written proposals
and phone calls.
- Respond to donor inquiries that originate from specified areas of the country,
with appropriate information on bequests, life income gifts and other gift
planning vehicles.
- Assist with directing and training Associate Gift Planning Officer, and
work jointly to oversee planned gift solicitations in specified areas of the
country.
- Undertake special projects at the direction of the Manager of Affiliate
Campaigns for Gift Planning.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree required. JD, MBA or related advanced degree preferred.
- Four years experience in fund raising or a related field.
- Familiarity with gift planning vehicles.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Interest in tax, financial and estate planning issues.
- Strong understanding of donor database management systems. Experience using
Planned Giving Manager software preferred.
- Commitment to the mission of the ACLU.
- Willingness to travel on a regular basis.
COMPENSATION:
The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package,
commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU compensation
scale.
