OVERVIEW:
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nationwide,
nonprofit organization with more than 500,000 members dedicated to the principles
of liberty and equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution. The In-House Counsel
of the Executive Department, which is responsible for internal legal matters
affecting the ACLU’s national offices, which includes over 350 employees
seeks a Legal Intern for Summer 2008 or Fall 2008.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The In-House Counsel of the Executive Department handles a broad range of matters
including:
Providing advice with respect to tax-exempt organizational law issues, including
tax laws applicable to public charities, and particularly those tax laws that
impact affiliated Section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations, lobbying rules,
and state charitable solicitation rules.
The In-House Counsel works closely with other departments within
the organization including:
- ACLU’s Communications Department on intellectual property and licensing
issues, trademark protection, film and other media production;

Working with all departments on negotiating and drafting contracts, including agreements with coalition parties, vendors and consulting contracts;
- Advising the Development Department with respect to grants received by the
ACLU;
- Advising the ACLU’s General Legal Department with respect to ethical
and procedural rules impacting or relevant to the legal representation of
clients;
- Advising management with respect to governance and compliance policies;
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Intern will conduct research projects including research on campaign finance
and lobbying disclosure rules applicable to nonprofit organizations, as well
as additional projects. The Intern will work approximately 8 hours per week.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- The position is open to 1L, 2L, and 3L students.
- Applicants must possess excellent writing skills and the ability to conduct
legal research.
- Must be self-motivated
- Must possess the ability to manage a variety of tasks and meet deadlines.
- Must possess a demonstrated commitment to public interest, civil rights,
and civil liberties issues is highly desirable.
COMPENSATION:
This internship is an unpaid position. Arrangements can be made for work/study
or course credit.
